Bushfood Walk for NBLT Alumni
Saturday October 17th, 1pm - 4pm
Pound Bend, Warrandyte, Victoria
Bushfoods & Medicine
Join NBLT Alumni and passionate bushfood educator Leila for a journey with the plants of Country – their gifts of food, fibre and medicine. Discover the joy of being in relationship with the native plants that nourish and heal.
Bushfoods are super delicious and nutritious and can easily be incorporated into your diet as meals, salads and snacks. Bush medicines offer simple remedies to common ailments such as coughs, colds, burns and bites when made into teas or applied topically. Once established, natives will grow themselves, requiring no watering or fertiliser. They attract native wildlife, creating vital habitat for birds, insects and pollinators.
Learn to recognise, harvest and prepare foods and medicines using honourable harvesting principles, and how to grow bushfoods at home.
The workshop will be hands on, with theory weaved into the workshop. You will receive a handout with easy to grow native plants, and their traditional uses, and simple recipes to follow at home.
As a non-indigenous person who has been mentored by indigenous knowledge holders of Bunurong and Palawa nations, Leila is conscious of the importance of sharing culturally appropriate knowledge and all activities will be respectful of this knowledge sharing.
You will learn:
How to grow and maintain bushfoods in the home garden
About the traditional and medicinal uses of natives
When and how to harvest using honourable harvest principles
How to cook with bush foods and incorporate them into your diet
To deepen your connection to nature through being in relationship with plants and the natural world.Details: The walk will be from 1pm - 4pm and join us at midday for a picnic before.
